Experiment Mistake FEATURE MEME

What’s the difference between an experiment and a mistake or a failure?

A failed (I hate that word) experiment is a consequence that refines your process, it’s a step forward. A failed experiment is merely a necessary and (should be) anticipated speed bump.Experiment Mistake Shoe Knots

A mistake is hitting the same speed bump repeatedly. The definition of crazy is making the same mistakes and expecting different results.

Remember when you were learning to tie your shoes? You didn’t perfect your performance right out of the box, (the bunny goes down the hole, then around the tree, etc.) you weathered many failed experiments to polish your steps. Now it’s like breathing and you don’t even remember the experimental stage of that activity.

I want you to win.

Experiment Mistake 2 guys looking through binoculars

You are all going to participate in a mental exercise today. I want you to deeply ponder this question:  What do you want your artist life to look like exactly?

There are no right or wrong answers here.

However, depending on your reply to the prior question, there will be right or wrong strategies to the solutions you seek.

You must ensure that your plan for success is not mismatched with the outcome you desire.

Your answers will have to come from outside because of the rapidly changing music industry. You’re going to need knowledge that you currently don’t have; thus, the source of your career frustration.Experiment Mistake Knowledge

Arnold Schwarzenegger was extremely unsatisfied building muscle on his calves early in his career (this is evidently a common hindrance amongst body builders). In his mind, doing calf raises with over 250 lbs. on the bar, would result in serious injury. He sought a mentor in South Africa who told him he needed 1,000 lbs. on the bar, his body could handle it, and he would see the results he wanted.

Experiment Mistake Arnold SchwarzeneggerHe watched his mentor execute this particular part of the workout without harm and then Arnold’s goal became immediately possible. He learned a new plan of attack, witnessed the execution of said plan, and saw the amazing effect.

Arnold then applied this newly discovered knowledge and changed what was a mismatched strategy with one that was consonant to the outcome he sought and BOOM, his calves began to bulk up. Problem solved.

Arnold pursued the truth by seeking knowledge from outside to remedy a problematic part of his process. He was rewarded with educated answers and most importantly, RESULTS.

So what do you seek?

Do you want to…Experiment Mistake Bono image

Make a living just recording and touring?

Be rich and famous as a writer, recording and touring artist?

Be an iconic artist?

Just be famous?

Just be rich?

Experiment Mistake Stop Light Solution

Once you determine exactly where you are headed you can reverse engineer the steps to make it happen and take APPROPRIATE causative action.

Then you’ll begin to initiate a set of experiments to help you pave the way to your goal.

Artists often ask me, “How can I succeed?”

The fact is all artist’s paths to success are unique so answering that question up front and with authority is a fool’s game.

Artists ask this question for several reasons:

  • They’re lazy and haven’t researched anything
  • They’re scared to experiment
  • They don’t believe in themselves so they want to fast-track the inevitable (whatever that means).

Mostly they’re lazy.Experiment Mistake Afraid

We are all a little lazy.

We are all scared.

We artists are operating with an incompatible approach to our problem.

Let me explain.

Experiment Mistake Time and Money

Employment is essentially instantaneous reciprocal altruism. You sacrifice your time and a skill and in exchange, your employer sacrifices a scarce resource; money.

This is what we are used to and too many of you expect this kind of dynamic with your careers.

When you’re a venture capital company that invests in business startups you play on a higher level. There is a much deeper emotional quotient that must exist. You expect results in the form of momentum and progress but the payoff is not immediate. There is usually a 5 year exit plan for the investors. This is more akin to developing an artist.

  • A market has to be articulated (what “widget” are we selling and to whom?)Experiment Mistake experiment
    • This takes research, experimentation, and is often refined and refined again.
  • The “first draft” of the intellectual property is created.
    • This takes research and experimentation.
  • The intellectual property has to be advanced.
    • This takes research and experimentation
  • The intellectual property has to be prototyped into a tangible product.
    • This takes experimentation to account for design flaws, optimal effectiveness, presentation, spatial restrictions, and ease of manufacturing.
    • This is the “proof of concept” stage.
  • The prototypes have to be assembled and tested for durability, workability, effectiveness, user friendliness, etc.
    • Prototyping costs time and money, again, through experimentation, because there is no economy of scale. (Low volume means higher prices)Experiment Mistake Chemistry Dude
  • The optimized prototypes are send to mass manufacturing and become the sellable product.
    • This step requires research and experimentation, will the manufacturer play by our rules and within our budget?
  • The product has to be packaged appropriately
    • This takes research and experimentation. What packaging is more attractive and effective in the marketplace?
  • The product has to be distributed
    • This step requires research and experimentation as not all products belong in all markets.
    • Not all distribution deals are in harmony with the product designer.
  • The product has to be marketed.
    • This step always requires research and experimentation as sometimes you “tap into” a market that is preexisting and sometimes you create a market that never existed before.Experiment Mistake Chemistry Set 2
    • Often the experimentation is in the form of assembling an effective team that understands the company credo and will execute the plan accordingly.
  • The product has to be shipped/delivered.
    • This sometimes requires research and experimentation.

Can you see the similarities with this list and a solid creative plan for an artistic effort?

Do you see how much research and experimentation takes place along each step of the way?

Most of you probably don’t experiment nearly as much as you need to in the artistic intellectual property creation stage (which is where you ALL feel you are the strongest)

Experiment Mistake 25 Headlines

FYI, sometimes I’ll write 25 headlines to an article before I settle on the one I use…that’s 24 failed experiments to get to the gold because all the obvious and cliché content is exhausted during the first 15-20 which causes me to really think…just sayin’.

Do you craft your songwriting this way?

If you’re a rapper and you freestyle (which I find absolutely fascinating when it’s done well) do you create your beats and your hooks this way?

Most of you have never even attempted to experiment in the marketing phase of the process because it’s unfamiliar so you’re afraid.

SExperiment Mistake No Fear Imageo you lie to yourself and say, “Good music will find its own audience” or you rely on the idea that once you get your “deal” the label will handle that part of it.

Experiment Mistake Failure Rate

Here’s a scary fact from a study I heard about humans and experimentation recently.

50% of people quit after the first “failure”.

80% of people quit after the second “failure”.

95% of people quit after the third “failure”.

Is it no surprise that the two most common traits among self-made multi-millionaires (aka your favorite iconic artists) are leadership and tenacity?

Are you aware of the astonishing number of millionaires that went bankrupt 3 times before becoming millionaires?

Are you willing to go THAT FAR to achieve greatness?Experiment Mistake Wealth Collage

Now, let’s think about the wealthiest 5% in this country. Many of you have been taught to hate them.

Many of you subscribe to societal social biases like “They made their money on the backs of the real people”, “They’re dishonest”, “They’re sharks”, or “They’re only in it for the money”.

Here’s a thought, what if you’re angry because the top 5% is doing what you won’t?

What if they’re the only ones willing to innovate and research their way out of career frustrations?

What if they’re willing to fail more than 3 times on all the experimental steps of whatever process turns them on?

How’s your tenacity these days?

What research are you doing?

Experiment Mistake GE Logo Vintage

When Thomas Edison died he was one of the wealthiest men in the country, he had over 1,100 patents (he started General Electric which [I think] is the only corporation still around that was on the ORIGINAL New York Stock Exchange.)

Edison stated that he did at least 1,000 experiments to obtain the intellectual property requirements necessary to receive each patent.

THAT’S OVER 1 MILLION EXPERIMENTS.

How many of you have this kind of experimental curiosity with your music?

How many experiments have you done with the MARKETING of your music?

When the labels who used to own and therefore control the market aren’t sure what to do, it’s up to US, the artists, to innovate our way out of the mess and into success.Experiment Mistake The Secret

If 95% of humans will quit after the 3rd failure, isn’t knowing this statistic your secret weapon?

Isn’t that David’s advantage over Goliath?

You are a product of the input you receive.

I’m going to butcher this analogy but Tai Lopez refers to this as a sort of intellectual “success” soup.

Experiment Mistake Soup Collage

You can be the greatest chef in the world, but if you only have chicken and water your soup sucks.

You need more ingredients like salt, pepper, spices, onions, celery, carrots, etc.

EVERYTIME you learn, you add another ingredient to your artistic soup.

The more ingredients you have the more different combinations you can experiment with.

The more you research, the more curious and motivated you are to “play” with your newfound knowledge.

The more you experiment the more you refine the process

The more you refine your process the closer you get to whatever your goal initially was.Experiment Mistake The Thinker

NOBODY is smart enough to sit in a room and think up ideas about making music or marketing music without some form of outside input.

Are you picking up what I am putting down?

Your mentors are not going to show up at your doorstep, a gig, or appear in your dreams. YOU will have to seek THEM out.

Yes, I paid a lot of money for access to this Tai Lopez program and it is worth EVERY PENNY.

I discovered validation on my old ways of thinking, new ways to apply the knowledge I have, new ways of thinking and concepts I wasn’t aware existed, and new resources to find the information I seek.

Experiment Mistake Education Chalkboard

I’m excited! My creative juices are FLOWING!

Aren’t you tired of being frustrated?

How good does real momentum feel?

Too many of you think that you’ll dream up the answers on your own. NOT WITHOUT INPUT.

You’re born with an instinctual ability to suck (pun intended), after that you need input, direction, advice, mentoring, teaching, guidance, coaching, etc., to get ahead.Experiment Mistake Sucking

You never would’ve figured out how to tie your shoes without someone showing you the way.

How do you really expect to reach your goal of creating compelling artistry and finding a market for it by yourself?

You’d better rethink your plan and ensure that it matches your goal.

Lombardi Feature MEME

Vince Lombardi achieved GREATNESS. He was an amazing, driven, highly successful, and highly influential individual who chose professional football coaching as a career back when the pressure was the same but professional football coach’s salaries were nowhere near what they are today.

So he didn’t do it for the money, he did it out of love.

Just like you do with your music career.

Vince Lombardi was so influential in his chosen endeavor that the trophy for the highest level of success in pro football, the Super Bowl trophy (this is the trophy that every pro player, coach, and team owner want to be photographed holding), is called the Lombardi trophy.

It represents excellence, achievement, and culmination of a long struggle.

It embodies greatness.

Lombardi Green Bay HOF

I’m on a Green Bay Packer kick today because my sister, bless her buns, called me last Thursday and said she had 2 extra tickets to the Brett Favre Packer Hall Of Fame induction at Lambeau Field. Of course my girlfriend Cari and I IMMEDIATELY made plans to witness history and went up to Green Bay for the weekend.

Watching Brett Favre address the 67,000 fans (all tickets sold out in 90 minutes, btw) who showed up at Lambeau to share his accomplishment was special. Grown men, and I was one of them, Lombardi Lambeau Fieldsobbing in the stands because Brett and that team brought the air of excellence BACK to the Packers organization.

We used to be great, then we lost the habit of winning 20 years prior (when Lombardi left Green Bay), now we simply EXPECT to win every game again.

Not hope, EXPECT.

Cari, my sister, my brother-in-law, and I were witnessing greatness.

That got me thinking of what greatness means.

Lombardi Everyone at Lambeau

That got me thinking of how greatness is achieved.

That got me thinking of how most people so falsely believe that one is born with greatness, they easily and predictably overlook the fact that greatness is always a result of hard work and dedication.

This notion naturally circled me back to Vince Lombardi.

Then I imagined how the mind and thought process of Lombardi could be attributed to your music career.

Greatness is attainable for anyone.Lombardi Edison Opportunity Quote MEME

I’ll rephrase, greatness is attainable for anyone who is willing to work.

So greatness is attainable to you…if you’re willing to work.

Just like in the music business, the NFL has players who are born with amazing talent who amount to nothing because they won’t work, who buckle in the face of adversity and hang it up mentally.

They psychologically quit, and that becomes a habit.

Lombardi Little Guy image

Just like in the music business, the NFL has players who are measurably less talented and smaller than those that surround them but are willing to out-work everyone, they know they must out-work everyone to compete to win the job that will grant them the opportunity to achieve greatness.

Brett Favre (2nd round pick drafted to the Falcons as a 3rd string QB) and Tom Brady (6th round draft pick) immediately come to mind.

These two men weren’t the “darlings of the NFL draft” to say the least. They were afterthoughts.Lombardi Favre PIc

Do you ever feel like an afterthought?

Afterthoughts can achieve greatness.

I think as humans and certainly as artists we often get mentally hung up on the ultimate goal, which is far enough away that we forget to focus on what will make us great.

Lombardi Momentum Meme

Momentum.

We forget to focus on the little wins, the little battles that determine momentum.

Like in Football.

They say football is a game of inches.

Inches that are mission critical in a 4 down series.

Each 4 down series is a battle that needs to be understood, dissected, and ultimately won to create a new set of opportunities; another 4 down series.

Lombardi Football INCHES FREE Pixabay

That leads to another opportunity to add to or change the momentum, and then another opportunity and so on.

Many little battles are won and it’s exciting because it creates momentum.

Many little battles are lost and that’s frustrating because momentum is lost.

But you can lose a bunch of battles and still win the game.

You can lose a bunch of games and still win your division which creates the opportunity to achieve greatness in the playoffs.

See my point?

Don’t overthink the wins. They are little battles that when won, need to be celebrated but you have another battle coming right up and you need to prepare to win that one, so don’t get carried away on a head trip.

Lombardi Big Head Devil

Don’t get a big head, you DEVIL!

Get to work.

Don’t overthink the losses, they are little battles that if mentally treated correctly, become learning experiences that help you win the war. The same advice applies to these losses, don’t get carried away on a head trip.

Lombardi Head in the Sand

Scared?

Get to work.

Here are some of my favorite Lombardi quotes and some notes/responses I have added to apply them to your music career.

Read them and introspect for a moment. Hit me back and let me know which of these quotes resonates with you the most.

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”  I think the pursuit of perfection keeps you in writing or practicing mode just long enough to raise the bar.

“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” – The task at hand is not becoming a successful artist, the task at hand is whatever you should be doing that day to get closer to success. Focus on the TASK AT HAND.

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” – This is the most common denominator with successful people in the music business; will to survive. After that there are varying degrees of talent, strength, and knowledge, but EVERYONE must possess the will.

“Leaders aren’t born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.” – I am blessed to be working with 2 young artists, Abbey Cone and Bailey James. Yes, both of these girls are very talented, but they are important artists and they will achieve greatness because they out-work everyone around them. That’s really the main reason.

Believe me each of their careers is not an unbroken boulevard of green lights, there is plenty of adversity, they consistently overcome it.Lombardi Abbey Bailey Collage

They are quite literally making themselves into leaders.

“Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you’re willing to pay the price.” – Therefore you can accomplish anything if you’re willing to do the work.

I don’t know why so many artists don’t understand this, maybe it’s a need to be famous rather than a need to be an artist.

There is definitely a laziness factor in many people.

Lombardi Laziness Rubiks CubeArtistry in any endeavor is about work, period.

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” – I see this time and time again and it is ubiquitous across all the industries I have had careers in as well as my personal life. The harder I work at it, the better my quality of life gets.

How much are you really working on improving the quality of your life?

“Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.” – Whoa.

“If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?” – Artists should keep score with momentum.

Don’t focus on the ultimate goal.Lombardi Leaders aren't born they are made MEME

Focus on executing the next step.

With Bailey James we are constantly attending to the creation of consistent content and growing not only her reach on social media but her engagement. As we increase her engagement we increase her fan base. 5 months later she has astounding numbers (averaging 500 likes and 50 comments per post on Instagram) and we still haven’t released the EP.

“I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious.”Nothing beats that feeling of success. Make sure you are managing expectations and setting attainable goals to succeed at. Momentum is key here, get 1% better than you did the day before. ENJOY and CELEBRATE the little victories…then get back to work.

“Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing-the result.” – The world doesn’t care about what you want to do, only about what you have done. You better make sure you get that, it’ll help you make crucial decisions as to what the world should see and when they should see it.

Lombardi RISK Free Pixabay“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all-time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”- If you feel like you are in the habit of losing, habits can be changed. Changing habits is a behavior modification. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got. Don’t be afraid to take a risk….What have you got to lose?

“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” – This quote sums up the biggest, most common mistake I see artists making. It’s the old “If I only had this, I could get that” mentality.

This thought process is simply an excuse not to achieve.

Forget about what you don’t have and focus on what you do have.Lombardi Tony Iommi Fingers

Tony Iommi who is arguably one of the most influential rock guitar players in history lost 3 finger tips in a Blue Collar job related accident early in his career. He focused on what he had (the ability to play guitar) instead of what he didn’t have (fingertips) and invented leather tips so he could continue playing. Some have argued that it’s the leather fingertips that added to his unique sound, one that changed the sound and tone of Rock & Roll forever.

So focus on what you DO HAVE.

You will create opportunities

You will create momentum.

You will become more attractive.

“The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.” – This is probably one of the most common human pitfalls.

Lombardi Habits Make Us Celestine Chua License

Photo: Celestine Chua
License: http://bit.ly/1ryPA8o

Why are we so focused on avoiding the fall?

Is it because we are concerned more with perception over reality?

No matter how much thought EVERY human puts into this concept, regardless of intelligence, regardless of work ethic, falling is inevitable. The successful simply learn, get up, and find another way to win.

Every success is preceded by many challenges.

Every failure is preceded by an excuse.

“Once you agree upon the price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent’s pressure, and the temporary failures.” – I think this quote speaks to being firmly grounded in reality. If you are realistic in what it takes to achieve greatness, you will be willing to endure the many challenges and falls that will surely come. Don’t be naïve as to the price.

“The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.” – I mean, right?!?!?!Lombardi Thomas Edison quote

“We didn’t lose the game; we just ran out of time.” – Edison didn’t fail 2,000 times at creating the light bulb, he discovered 2,000 not to do it. Then there was the 2,001st time.

Get it?

“It’s easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you’re a winner, when you’re number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you’re not a winner.” – NOW is the time to have faith and discipline.

Lombardi I Believe In Me image

Why do so many people think they will execute that kind of behavior once they “make it”?

Give Up Don't you dare FEATURE

Did you ever notice how we only see success as success?  When we are first exposed to someone successful we initially only think about their success, right?

We covet a little bit.Give Up The Struggle You Don't See

We become envious.

Unless we are exposed to all the details of a personal success story, we don’t see (and we’re usually not told) about the struggle that preceded the success. We weren’t told about how many times they didn’t give up.

Every success comes with mountains of struggle

mountain-landscape-640617_castle_peI have news for you, EVERY success comes with mountains of struggle, endless hurdles, obstacles overcome, bullets dodged, etc.  There is ALWAYS a back story rife with failure, heartbreak, doubt, fear, second thoughts, and the fact that they didn’t give up through any of it.

Bottom line, I can guarantee you’ll fail if you don’t try again.  Nobody can guarantee failure if you don’t give up.  So, it’s a scientific fact that you can win if you don’t give up and you will definitely lose if you quit.

The only thing that is impossible is what you don’t try to achieve.Give up Don't You Are So Close

What’s the worst that could happen?

You have to try again?

So what?  It’s worth it, right?

This dream of yours isn’t going to be easy. Simply put, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

Here are 10 reasons not to give up

  1. It’s All About Talent Again Give Up You Bring The Talent 2

As terrestrial radio continues to become less effective at breaking acts in the marketplace, the big hype machine disappears with it.  The ability to “hype” a non-talent into super-stardom is waning fast.  The future stars in the music business are going to have to be talented to get recognized.  Don’t give up. You have talent. Talent will win in the end.

  2. Pressure = Creation

There’s a saying that goes “Necessity is the mother of invention”.  You thrive on pressure even if you think you don’t.  You are stronger than you think.  Rick Rubin on several occasions (most notably Weezer’s “Beverly Hills” and Tom Petty’s “It’s Good To Be King”) would wait until a week or so before the scheduled recording sessions to tell an artist he didn’t think they had a single just to see what the pressure would create.  Never give up. Pressure creates diamonds, I know it’s cliché, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

  3. Failure

Give Up Failure doesn't come from falling downYou need it believe it or not.  It’s what teaches you how to navigate your career better. Failure is what teaches you how to win. Remember every success is preceded by many failures. Just ask Michael Jordan who was cut from his high school basketball team; he didn’t give up. Sheryl Crow got a major label deal and recorded her first album only to scrap it completely before it was released. Of course she was then sued by her label; this was before Tuesday Night Music Club. She didn’t give up. Thomas Edison failed 2,000 times before he nailed the long lasting incandescent light bulb. He didn’t give up.  Henry Ford went bankrupt multiple times before he invented the assembly line. he didn’t give up either.

  4. The Pursuit

Life happens as you make your way toward your goal; enjoy it.  This time in your struggle, these are the moments that you will remember forever.  Again, I know its cliché, but think about it, success is not a destination, it is the journey.  Especially in the music business, man, you are either on your way up or on your way down, there is no plateau where “things calm down” and you relax. Don’t give up. You want to make a living being a creative which means you’re always creating.

  5. You Are Strong Give Up Stay Strong

You are stronger than you think.  You have the capability to understand the fact that your career is always full of challenges, so EXPECT them and eat them for breakfast.  Success will come when you resign yourself to dealing with these challenges as challenges, not excuses.  1, 10, or even 1,000 setbacks are not enough to stop you, so don’t give up.

  6. If You Give up on Yourself Everyone Else Will Too

Listen, ALL successful people have overcome incredible odds and incredible struggles to get where they are; you just aren’t aware of the back story.  These prosperous people deeply understand that success is a mindset.  They surround themselves with positive, like-minded people.  They view quitters as a cancer, or a STD.  When you project negativity or a quitting vibe it pisses successful people off.  It pisses them off because it scares the shit out of them.  It scares them because they KNOW failure is just 1 negative thought away.  Don’t give up.

  7. There is no Overnight Success

No great thing was created overnight.  Many years of work went into every success before it ever came to your attention. Don’t be naive. Don’t give up.

  8. You’re Just a Few Tweaks Away

Sometimes a few tweaks and adjustments to a plan are all that it takes to make a giant leap forward.  Over the course of my band’s first tour, we lost $8,000 because I didn’t know what I was really doing.  A few tweaks coupled with a clearer understanding of the game and our second touring experience had us actually making a living on ½ the gross revenue! Don’t give up. I failed first, learned, then got better; you can too.

  9. You Can Change the Industry ForeverGive Up The Struggle Your in today

Make your dent, man.  Florida Georgia Line had the BEST writers in town and a KILLER producer behind their project.  All the record labels still said “No” because FL/GA Line was too different.  They went to Satellite radio where “Cruise” became a smash hit and after a little tour they sold 100,000 downloads.  Then every label that said “no” was saying “yes”. The record, the production, the band, the sound, and the songs didn’t change.  The only thing that changed was the perception. They didn’t give up when everyone said no. Don’t give up.

  10. Let the Haters Hate

The more you succeed the more haters you will have.  Think of them like little trophies, assuming you’re not a douchebag it means you’re doing something right.  Don’t give up.

Give Up Do It For The People Who Want To See You Fail

Give Up It's hard to wait for something that may never happen

Give Up You Can't Go A Day Without Thinking About

Give Up You Are the creator of your own destiny
